What is College Financial Aid?
College financial aid helps students and their families cover higher education expenses, including tuition, fees, room, board, books, transportation. Here are the key points on how it works:

Grants: These do not need to be repaid and are typically based on financial need

Scholarships: Also don't require repayment and can be merit-based or need-based

3. Application Process

Start by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) It determines eligibility for Federal aid

Some schools use the CSS Profile, a more detailed form, to allocate their own funds

If the student is a NYS resident and will attend a college in NY, they may be eligible for a NYS TAP award. In addition, the Excelsior and Enhanced Tuition Awards scholarships are available to students attending public colleges and select private colleges in NYS if income thresholds are met.

Deadlines vary so check with your school for specific dates. REMEMBER, financial aid can make higher education more affordable, so explore your options and apply early.
